Anybody have any tips for feeding liver to dogs? I just purchased 55 lbs of sliced beef liver frozen in 1 lb tubs which the local processing plant needed to move out. I plan to use it to supplement the dogs commercial dry chicken & rice food, maybe once a week, but would like some guidance from some of you who use raw food as to how much, quanity wise, per dog....and any other comments regarding it. Thanks! _________________ mwbowsher

| Start with small amounts at first--no more than an ounce at a time, as liver is very rich and dogs who aren't used to it in their diets will get horrible diarrhea if they eat too much at once. My raw-fed dogs get 2-3 ounces at a time a few times a week. |

My dogs get Diamond most of the time. When I run low and don't feel like a trip to the feed store that day out comes the beef liver. I give them each half of a one pound package and they seem to digest it fine. The only time I have trouble with them not wanting to wait until I say ok to eat is when the white packages come out. _________________ The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. I am a lucky man in some respects. I've had quite a few dogs through here in the last ten years or so and have managed to avoid most health problems. My old boy Ladd went blind over the last year from aquired PRA which makes me very sad but I haven't had any other major health problems in my dogs. _________________ The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. Hey, I've met your wife and I'd have to say you're a VERY lucky man, Kevin...
You've also "invested" in good WORKING dogs from WORKING bloodlines - so you made your own luck there... _________________ Bill Gary

Thanks! Do those of you who feed raw use beef hearts? If so, ground or just chunked up, and how much per med size dog? _________________ mwbowsher

Man, If i lived anywhere near you, i fight those lucky dogs for slices of beef liver. I love liver and onions. And no one else in my family has ever gone along. I get it only when I eat out. And people stare. _________________ nancy |

Nancy, My husband is in the same boat! A freezer full of liver and I can't stand to smell it long enough to cook it for him. The dogs love it though, and it disapears before it hits the bottom of the feed pan. _________________ mwbowsher

I just cut up the beef heart into bite size pieces. As I feed it as the second meal of the day, they don't get more than about 1/3 pound. Main meal is ground up chicken, bones and all.
